How to Win Checkers In 2 Moves, 3 Moves or 4 Moves?

Can You Win Checkers In 2 Moves, 4 Moves or 3 Moves?

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but no, you can’t win a checkers game in 2, 3 or 4 moves. This question might come up because of chess. There are two well-known checkmates that occur in 2 moves and 4 moves—Fool’s Mate & Scholar’s Mate.

The fewest possible moves in a complete checkers game seems to be 10 on each side.

It makes sense that a checkers game can’t be won in 2, 3 or 4 moves when we consider the conditions needed for a win. It’s not like chess where you need to attack a single piece (the king) to win. In checkers, you win by:

  • Capturing all your opponents pieces, or
  • Rendering your opponent unable to move

Clearly, it’s not possible to take all the enemy pieces in 4 moves or less. It’s also not possible to block your opponent that quickly.

I imagine that in the shortest checkers games, where each side makes 10 moves, the win is a result of one side getting blocked and being unable to move.

Although you can’t win checkers in 2, 3, or 4 moves, you can still get off to a good start with an effective opening and you can still win by improving your checkers strategy.
